After a restful evening at the Motel 6 Amarillo, it was time to head on again. I looked in MapQuest to get an idea of how long it would take to get to Fort Worth.... 9 hours was its calculation. Jumped on Highway 287 south and started off on another leg of my journey... Sometimes it's hard to believe how many miles I've covered in the last week... I've been in 7 states in 6 days! They seem to roll by like nothing. Driving through northern Texas reminds me of my childhood home.. Nebraska. The landscape is almost identical.... miles and miles of rolling pastures as far as the eye can see, a farm house in the distance, cattle trucks zooming by... Sometimes I wonder if I took a wrong turn! I'm also reminded of several things I haven't see in decades... Grasshoppers. Dust devils. A picnic table on the side of the road. The hot blast of wind on a summer day in the midwest. Small towns with that "old" flavor, a general store, streets paved in brick, a grain elevator...I swear, some of these towns look like they went back in time 50 years. The sighting of a pickup covered in mud is growing more common, too.... but the nicest thing: The number of Camaro & Firebirds on the road is increasing as well. I'm surprised how many LS1 cars I see around here. The temperature in a couple towns is in the high 90's. All the Texas guys are saying I'm gonna die when I come down here... I say BAH! After my experiences at Arches, I'm pretty sure I can handle anything Texas can throw at me. Yes, it's hot... but it's not unbearable. I *LIKE* hot weather, guys... I'm eating this up! As I'm driving, I'm watching the road signs... and notice that Forth Worth really isn't that far away...9 hours, MY ASS!! I'm gonna make it there in about 5 hours 20 minutes. I arrived in Forth Worth at about 4:00 pm (I wasn't expecting to be there until 8:00), so I have a little time to kill before I meet up with my contacts here. I decided to explore Forth Worth a little and get an idea what I'd run into as far as rush hour traffic.. Hmm... pretty nasty. So I decided to get out of that for a while, and headed up north to see Texas Motor Speedway (pictured above). Very cool. Here's a few random pictures I snapped on the way... I picked up the cell and gave a ring to Jerry (a.k.a. ripper2102 / outlaw from LS1.COM), and headed down to hook up with him. Jerry was gracious enough to offer me a place to crash for the evening, of which I am MOST appreciative... I hope everyone I meet in Texas is as nice as Jerry has been, he's a really cool guy. Thanks a ton, man! After darkness fell, I got a nice view of lightning on the horizon... I'd forgotten just how dazzling thunderstorms can be in the midwest... The air is cooling off, looks like there's a storm coming in.. We chatted for a while, and I unpacked some stuff, then Jerry and I headed off to Hooters for some dinner and some eye candy... Damn, there ARE some real hotties in Texas. Jerry says that there's better that this... Oh my God, I think I'm gonna love it here. A few minutes after we arrived at Hooters, the clouds decided to let loose, and it started DUMPING rain. I haven't seen rain like this in ages, either... I mean, it rains in Seattle... but not LIKE THIS! Our waitress, Melissa, who is a serious hottie, has the most perfect ass I have ever seen in my life, I mean like PAINFULLY perfect. I feel like I'm gonna pass out every time I watch her walk by. And here I am WITHOUT MY DIGITAL CAMERA. Ow!! I'll remember not to make that mistake again! We chatted with Melissa for a while, and when we saw a break in the rain, we decided it was time to head back. I was a bit tired from all the driving, so we just chilled out, played a little GT3 and watched a flick the rest of the evening.... Tomorrow... off to Dallas! <<previous ----- <<schedule>> ----- next->> |
